Remy Battery Company History

Remy Battery has been a family-owned and operated business since our doors first opened in 1931. Michael Zurich founded the company at the height of the Depression, filling a need as a service-oriented, local battery rebuilder. With the economy at a standstill, rebuilding lead-acid batteries was in demand and remained profitable enough to carry Remy Battery through the Depression.

By the early 1940s, Michael wisely reinvested in his company and Remy began manufacturing batteries. When World War II ended in 1945, our small company was ready to meet the growing need for quality replacement automotive batteries.

Throughout the 1940s, 50s and 60s, Remy continued manufacturing batteries until industry consolidation created an increasingly competitive marketplace. Once again, Michael had the foresight to recognize industry needs and moved his focus away from manufacturing and toward our established and efficient network of route trucks to distribute lead-acid batteries throughout southeastern Wisconsin. At the close of the 1960s, a second generation was being trained to take Remy Battery to the next level in distribution operations combined with exceptional service.

In the early 1970s, Michael’s son-in-law, Richard “Dick” Moeller, became President of Remy Battery. Under his direction, we expanded route and retail operations and added a more diverse product offering to keep pace with ever-changing technology. Throughout the 1970s, 80s and 90s, Remy’s product line expanded to include battery power for uninterruptible power systems (UPS), cell phones, two-way radios, laptop computers and other portable devices. By the 1990s, Dick’s sons, Mike and Matt, joined the leadership team.
